1992, Te Rûnanga Mâtauranga o Tûhoe was established and
its first trustees were appointed - Professor Wharehuia Milroy, John Heremia,
Hirini Melbourne, Te Waiarani Harawira and Te Ripowai Higgins. It’s objectives
were:
To enhance the social and
economic well-being of Tûhoe in a manner that promotes and preserves
the integrity of Tûhoetanga.
To optimise resources in
the social and economic development of Tûhoe Whanui
To design and implement effective
health, welfare and education policies.
To actively revive and sustain
Te Reo Rangatira and Tûhoetanga
To achieve redress for Treaty
Of Waitangi claims
To regain mana whenua
Te Kaokao o Takapau is a
result of the rûnanga’s efforts to improve the well being of our
